Little Bay, The Cutting

Written by Px (Instructor SDA)

Location / How to get get there.

Follow Anzac Parade south until you come to the old Prince Henry Hospital entrance (the new Landcom development site), turn left into the entrance and drive down until you see the church and a sign which points the way to the Coast Golf Club.

Park on the hill overlooking Little Bay Beach in the designated parking areas. Please avoid parking near the Chapel as it is a great inconvenience to locals and those attending services at the Chapel.
The walk is quite long so beging by pacing yourself and head off slightly south east and down the hill, skirting Little Bay itself and heading for the cutting which is the next tiny bay immediately south of the much larger bay. You will need to cross 2 fairways to get there.

Once you arrive and are overlooking the cutting there are 2 ways to enter the water:

1. Follow the goat track down the grassy hill and walk across the rock platform into the water.

2. There is a narrow side cutting immediately on the left side of the main cutting which has large  stormwater pipes running down it. Follow these pipes and enter where they meet the water.

Amenities.

There are no ammenties nearby so make sure you have a pit stop before diving here.
There is a phone in the pro shop for emrgencies.

Experience Level.

I would recommend this dive to advanced divers only but intermediate divers would enjoy this site in pristine conditions

Best time to dive.

Westerly winds are great for this site so it is great in winter.
However, any day where there is no swell is fine.
The site is not as prone to the tides as sites in Botany Bay so it is fine anytime subject to swell. This site usually has great visibility because of the lack of runnoff water.

Where to enter/exit.

Entry and exit are usually made from the rock platform in the middle of the cutting.
It is quite shallow upon entry but drops off quickly with 30 metres of the entry point and forms a channel right in the centre of the bay.

Navigation.

There are 2 ways to proceed upon dropping down into the channel:

1.Right (south),brings you to an underwater wall and headland approximately 6m tall with many ledges and hidden swim throughs. Following this will lead out beyond the headland and into mostly unexplored territory.

2.Left (north), will eventually lead all the way around the headland into Little Bay itself.
This is an excellent dive but is quite a long swim so beware of your air consumption.

Points of interest.

Many overhangs and boulders where the wave action has carved smooth surfaces.
There is a hidden 20m swim through around half way along the 6m wall on the south side swim. The 6m wall is quite impressive and panoramic in clear water.

Local creatures.

This place is usually teeming with schooling fish like yellowtail and it is quite common to spot cuttlefish and I have seen weedfish here as well.

Tips (from the pro)

Never attempt this entry and exit if there is any doubt about the swell.
The conditions might look manageable but there is a distinct pull back and wash zone caused by the quick shallowing of the rock platform near the entry.
If you find yourself struggling to exit, then veer to the right (north side) and exit in usually calmer water near the stormwater pipes.
Be courteous to the golfers and only cross the fairways when it is clear.
A good level of fitness is required because of the long walk and the steep slopes of the cutting.
