| Little Bay, The Cutting |
|
Written by Px (Instructor SDA) Location / How to get get there.Follow Anzac Parade south until you come to the old Prince Henry Hospital entrance (the new Landcom development site), turn left into the entrance and drive down until you see the church and a sign which points the way to the Coast Golf Club. Park on the hill overlooking Little Bay Beach in the designated parking areas. Please avoid parking near the Chapel as it is a great inconvenience to locals and those attending services at the Chapel. Once you arrive and are overlooking the cutting there are 2 ways to enter the water: 1. Follow the goat track down the grassy hill and walk across the rock platform into the water. 2. There is a narrow side cutting immediately on the left side of the main cutting which has large stormwater pipes running down it. Follow these pipes and enter where they meet the water. Amenities. There are no ammenties nearby so make sure you have a pit stop before diving here. Experience Level.I would recommend this dive to advanced divers only but intermediate divers would enjoy this site in pristine conditions Best time to dive.Westerly winds are great for this site so it is great in winter. Where to enter/exit.Entry and exit are usually made from the rock platform in the middle of the cutting. Navigation. There are 2 ways to proceed upon dropping down into the channel: 1.Right (south),brings you to an underwater wall and headland approximately 6m tall with many ledges and hidden swim throughs. Following this will lead out beyond the headland and into mostly unexplored territory. 2.Left (north), will eventually lead all the way around the headland into Little Bay itself. Points of interest. Many overhangs and boulders where the wave action has carved smooth surfaces. Local creatures. This place is usually teeming with schooling fish like yellowtail and it is quite common to spot cuttlefish and I have seen weedfish here as well. Tips (from the pro)Never attempt this entry and exit if there is any doubt about the swell. |
