Written by Marty Hing (Associate Instuctor, SDA)

Location

Rocks at southern end of Maroubra beach.  From SDA follow Beauchamp Rd across ANZAC Pde.  Turn left at the roundabout onto Malabar Rd, then right at the traffic lights onto Fitzgerald Av.  Turn right at the roundabout and follow the narrow road past Arthur Byrne Reserve.  Park at the southern end of the carpark

Local Creatures

As mentioned above there are large schools bullseye, long finned pike oldwife and the odd wobbegong and giant cuttlefish hanging around the tumbled boulders.  Around the sand line keep an eye out for weedy sea dragons and out on the sand you will quite often see port Jackson sharks, fiddler rays, stingrays, and the occasional serpent eel.

Amenities

There is a freshwater shower and toilets at the northern end of the car park

Experience Level

Beginners to advanced.

Precautions

There can be strong rips on the beach.  The rocks are highly exposed to north east swells.  Watch for surfers when entering/exiting on the beach.

Best time to dive

This site is best dived in low swells.

Entry Point

You can enter straight off the beach, or head out along the rocks about 200m.

Exit Points

There are numerous low shelves to exit on along the rocks, but be careful of the swell.  The beach is the safest place to exit.

Navigation

South Maroubra is a very easy dive for navigation.  Remember to keep the rocks on your right  as you head out and on your left on your return journey.  If you get disorientated while exploring the various tumbled boulders ledges and overhangs, just head north until you hit the sand line.

Points of Interest

There is a large overhang in about 10m of water hiding up behind some boulders.  There are usually large schools of bullseye under the ledge and big schools of long finned pike hanging around the outside.  This overhang is about 500m out from the beach.

Tips from the pro

If you get caught in a rip swim to the side of it.  Don’t waste energy trying to fight it.
